Chess Lessons For The Entrepreneur
Winning at chess isn?t about IQ, or “seeing 12 moves ahead”. It?s a war game based on the same principles that underlie all human competition, including business. Even if you don?t know how the pieces (or VCs) move, learning the basic stratagems employed by successful players --and entrepreneurs-- will definitely improve your game and help get you to a “check.”
Our chess instructor will be Bob Rice, Chairman of publicly-traded Viewpoint Corporation, an internet marketing technologies company that grew out of his Princeton-based 3D graphics startup. Recently, Bob joined BayStar Capital, a multi-strategy hedge fund, to lead its private equity and venture capital efforts. He is also an active member of the New York Angels.
Before becoming a software entrepreneur, Bob co-founded the Professional Chess Association with World Champion Garry Kasparov and served as its Commissioner, introducing several novel formats, like “Man vs. Machine,” that garnered major sponsorships and an ESPN series.
Bob was also a partner at the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy, where he focused on capital markets transactions and intellectual property matters. He began his career as a trial lawyer at the US Department of Justice.
