Mobile Device Apps---The Entrepreneurial Gold Rush

quartley.jpg So much of entrepreneurship is about identifying solutions to problems that also offer the prospect of making money.  Such is the case following the founding of  Apple's mobile device App Store in July 2008.  Since its launch an entrepreneurial gold rush has occurred with the development of approximately 225,000 third party applications for iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads, resulting in over 5 billion downloads.*

Entrepreneurs such as Heath Ahrens of iSpeech and Alex Lavrinenko of On the Fly Tours jumped into app development to seize this entrepreneurial opportunity.  Heath began iSpeech in 2007 in his basement, launched his first application Drive Safe.ly at the end of 2008, and since then has significantly expanded his business  through increasing the number of employees and applications published.  In 2009 iSpeech moved into the NJIT EDC business incubator in Newark where larger space at below market rates and a range of resources has facilitated expansion.

Prior to founding iSpeech, Heath was in the speech technology field with a text to speech product designed for use on any platform.  The decision to focus on the mobile device platform was prompted by a co-worker's traffic accident caused by a texting driver.   Heath and his associates saw the opportunity to address this problem via an  app called DriveSafe.ly which  enables drivers hands free use of their mobile devices.  He recalls, "the texting while driving problem was all over the news in 2008, and when our co-worker was in an accident as a result of this problem, we became very motivated to offer a solution."

Alex Lavrinenko, a web site developer and consultant, also saw the opportunity to start a business to develop mobile device apps.  As he explains "a cell phone is usually with someone at all times, while computers are used for limited periods of the day, therefore people  value the greater convenience of doing tasks on their phone.  Also, the launch of  Apple's App Store with its Software Development Kit (SDK)  made it easier for outsiders to develop cell phone apps."   Alex has just published his first application, a guided walking tour of the NYC Financial District via cell phone.  Users may trial a free limited version of the tour which can be expanded via payment.  He also has just completed his web site, On The Fly Tours (www.otftours.com), and has begun to execute his marketing plan, while developing additional tour content.

Universities such as NJIT have also seen opportunities associated with the rapid growth of mobile device technology.  Since its first app class in January 2009, NJIT has instructed over 100 individuals on iPhone app development.  Certified iPhone OS Instructor Tim Kellers has been on the front line in an  industry that offers money making opportunities to technically experienced individuals, as well as those who have had little or no prior training.  Offered both in class or on line, participants can build an app in as little as the 6 to  8 weeks of each course's schedule.

To date Apple has paid over $1 billion to developers who receive 70% of fees earned through a purchase on the App Store.*  However, Tim cautions individuals considering a decision to pursue app development, "It is more than just about creating the new app. There are the same challenges of any new business---putting a business plan in place and having the right skills to execute a marketing plan.  It takes more time and focus to be successful than some people do not realize going in."

Tim also sees a major change occurring since the first apps were created a few years ago that were focused on the individual user of the phone.   He explains, "Now large corporations see the value of apps, and are hiring  app development companies to create mobile device apps for their company that meet the needs of employees and customers.  It bodes well when corporations such as Major League Baseball have entered the app arena  stimulating job creation and providing greater revenue streams to development companies."  App development revenue potential has been furthered by competition among the manufacturers of cell phone such as Google's Android and RIM's Blackberry that have initiated their own app development communities to counter the App Store.

With the recession now having hung over the economy since 2007, the mobile device industry is one clear bright spot for entrepreneurs.  In addition to being a high growth industry, a relatively modest amount of start up  capital is required for entry.   History will tell if it is remembered as well as the California Gold Rush of 1849.  *statistics provided by Wikipedia
